13 Elements for Cap Artwork

Cap Artwork Elements

As we all know, a professional designer mockup for making the favorite hat is quite important. But we could see many mockups that are not matched with the request, which would be quite difficult for factories to make accurate sample and bulk order.

Then what should it contain if we want a professional designer mockup?

We can refer to the designer mockups of professional cap companies such as New Era Cap, Headsweats, or Ahead Cap. There are two kinds of mockups. One is been used for internal communication and the other one is been used for external communication. Let’s talk more about it.

It is better to have the following information marked on the designer mockup for internal communication.

  • Company details and designer’s information
  • Modificationtime (if any)
  • Reviewer’sname
  • Designer mockup owner or companydetails
  • Hat style(or internal communication code)

And for external communication, below details are better to be shown.

  • Hat style(Low Profile, Medium Profile or High Crown Profile)
  • Hat size (For Adult, Lady, Youth, Kids, Infant or Big Head?)
  • Fabricand its color
  • LOGO details including color and size
  • Size and color of each panel

For external communication details, the Above 5 points are the must needed details, as it would determine whether the hat could be made out as per request. Internal communication details may not affect the hat’s production procedure for manufacturer, but it is also quite important, as those would be kept as a record for necessary use if need to find the source. For example, if the drawings are not made by yourself but are made by many different Freelance or professional drawing companies, then if you don’t specify the drawing company details on each drawing, you won’t know whom you could trace if you have any problems in the future. Same for the name of the reviewer. Everything can be checked from the source if details are clear enough.

But we said it’s more important to make the hat as wanted. So communication with factories must be clear and easy to understand without any hidden problems. A clear designer mockup effects better than words to make a high quality perfect hat.

We’ll illustrate the designer mockup in terms of two aspects, one is for overall effect, ad the other one is for partial effect.

Firstly, an overall designer mockup need to highlight the following points.

Hat Style

Hat Size

Generally there are sizes for Adult, Lady (Woman), Youth, Kids and Infant. As customer groups are different, so even for the same adult size the circumference needed may be different. Some customers can accept 55CM head circumference and some customers must make with 58CM head circumference. So the best way is to indicate the group of people (Adult, etc.) and also mention the head circumference details. Also as it is manual operation, so there would be a tolerance for around 0.5CM.

The fabric may be the difficult part of the customization process. If you have a consensus with factory to use normally made fabric, then it would be quite easy, and you just need to give them the code or give a fabric photo. There are also some international common fabric that could be directly marked such as cotton twill 108*56/16*12 or cotton bead canvas 12 Ann, but if you want a fabric same as one of your clothes or your favorite hat which is hard to tell the fabric, then it would be better that you send the reference sample to factory to get the same or similar fabric.

Be sure that never just write a “100% Cotton” or “100% Polyester”as the ingredients for fabric. Because there are two many kinds of cotton or polyester fabric, which will just waste a lot of time to communicate on the fabric.

If you need to customize hats all the year around, then you could ask hat suppliers provide their latest fabric for your reference. Or you could collect fashionable fabric from your team to send to factory as a reference, and better to mark them with your special code for further communication.

Using which color depends on your relationship with the supplies. If you just start with customization with them, then PMS code should be your better choice. As this is international commonly used code which is familiar to almost all the suppliers.

Due to the quantity, customer may not be so easy to customize their special color. And they may rely to the market for available colors. Fabric suppliers may have their own color chart and code which could be chosen. If you are planning to have a long-term cooperation with your suppliers, then you could ask them to send you the color reference samples for your further easy communication for fabric and colors. Anyway, if your quantity is big enough, then you could directly ask factory to customize your own special colors for your orders only.

Logo could be made with many different ways. If you are not clear enough, then logos would be made totally different. So whether it is embroidery, printing, hot stamping, rubber stamping, iron stamping or woven making you should express clearly to avoid communication back and forth which could save the time and cost.

Even it’s embroidery, you have to figure out the difference between different embroideries. Flat embroidery can’t be written as 3D embroidery, and If the pattern is too complicated or lines are too thin, then you could not use 3D embroidery. You have to mention clearly, no matter it is flat embroidery, 3D embroidery, towel embroidery, water soluble embroidery or others.

If you just look at a certain kind of technique and want to make the same effect on your logo, but you did not know how to express, then please do not hesitate and send physical sample to factory to save you time. Let the experienced factory help you figure it out and do on your own customized products, as they know the advantage and limitations which would offer you the best suggestion.

If you still want to show your creativity, then be sure to consider the feasibility. Recently, it is particularly popular to foil hot stone on English word on the embroidery, this is workable but you need to consider if there are enough space, also if the stones could be fixed well on the surface.

Besides the technique of the logo, the placement of the logo should also be mentioned clearly. For example, where to print, where to foil the stones, where to do with rubber printing, all of which need to be shown on the designer mockup. So from here, we can see that the designer mock need to have not only the overall details, but need to have partial details.

Secondly, a partial designer mockup need to highlight the following points.

Panels’ Color and Size

This part is relatively simple. Colors on each panels would be shown on overall designer mockup, and sizes are depending on hat type (high crown or medium crown) which are easy to decide.

Where there is a large area that need to do with printing or embroidery, then the best way is to make panels details separately with original proportion, which is easier and more convenient for factory to use directly for cutting the fabric. Below is an example from New Era Cap.

In addition to the above, there are some other details that need to be marked. Take baseball as an example in the following.

Designer mockup must be as professional as possible as it would effect the final effect and price. A unclear fabric expression may show a totally different effect. With the same 210D, price for nylon may be five times as much as polyester; with the same waterproof polyester, brand Microfiber would have much difference from brand Nike; and with the same Camo, the one from Company RealTree would cost much more than the one made by factory itself. So designer mockup is absolutely the essential part of the customization.
